Imported Italian Easter (Pasqua) Foods

Like all holidays in Italy, Easter (Pasqua in Italian) celebrations focus on the food and good company. The traditional Easter meal – shared with family, relatives, neighbors, and friends - includes lamb or goat, artichokes, and a special Easter sweet bread for dessert called Colomba (dove shaped). Sweetbreads do vary from region to region, but are often also given as gifts.

It’s no surprise that Easter in Italy is far less commercialized than here in America. Apart from sweetbreads and flowers, usually the only gifts are “uovo di Pasqua” – a hollow chocolate Easter egg with a surprise inside.

Easter Monday, called Pasquetta (Little Easter) is also traditionally a work holiday and spent outdoors with family and friends.
