Imported Italian Christmas Foods
Christmas (Natale in Italian) is celebrated in Italy from December 8th (the Feast Day of the Immaculate Conception) until January 6th (the Epiphany).
Their festivities tend to be less commercialized and closer to the religious roots of the season, but Italians have started to adopt some of the American traditions including trees, decorations, and even Santa Claus (Babbo Natale). These "new" traditions have been incorporated appropriately into their celebrations - keeping the focus on the season and loved ones.
Did you know...instead of writing letters to Santa for gifts, Italian children write letters to their parents telling them how much they love them, which are read during the light Christmas Eve (Italian: vigilia di Natale) meal. Celebrations are large on Christmas Day with friends and family together enjoying a delicious lunch that may continue all day long.
